Position Type
Full-time (This is a 5-day, on-site position located in our downtown Toronto, Ontario office, as we feel this is the best way to learn from your colleagues and become part of the SIGNAL team. Occasional work from home days are granted to assist with the hecticness of life.)
Job Summary
You will:
-
underwrite new business, endorsements and renewal commercial Property & Casualty accounts within SIGNAL Underwriting’s industry sectors
-
help the underwriting team evaluate insurance applications, negotiate terms and recommend accepting or rejecting risks
-
work closely with senior underwriters to assess policy applications, gather relevant information, and apply underwriting guidelines and criteria to determine appropriate coverage and pricing
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Underwrite risks that fit within our existing product offerings, which can include Healthcare entities, Life Sciences, Manufacturing, Wholesale and Distribution, Retail Liability and Errors and Omissions. Duties include but are not limited to:
-
Learning our underwriting guides for your assigned classes of business
-
Logging submissions into our policy management system
-
Reviewing submissions against our underwriting guidelines and delegated authority
-
Pricing and quoting risks within your underwriting authority statement
-
Referring risks to management outside of your underwriting authority statement
-
Issuing policy documentation
-
Handling mid-term policy changes and cancellation requests, including using the policy management system

Work with our partner brokers. Duties include but are not limited to:

Developing relationships with our partners

Responding to inquiries and sharing experience and knowledge of our product segments

Keeping our policy management system up to date with brokerage and individual broker details
-
Keeping files up to date by saving and filing email communications
-
Communicating in advance of policy renewals to facilitate the renewal process
-

Engage with our carrier partners on individual risks, as needed. Duties include but are not limited to:

Participating in monthly underwriting meetings
-
Consulting with them and management on referrals outside of delegated authority
-

Perform administrative tasks, as needed

Prior commercial insurance underwriting experience (this is preferred, but not required)

Keen to gain in-depth knowledge of our specialty segments (prior experience or knowledge with our specialty segments is not a requirement as you will be trained and mentored on the job)

High school diploma (required), university degree or college certificate/diploma (preferred), or relevant work experience

Professional Certification:
-
Willing to take courses and get insurance designation(s)

Computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Strong professional communication, both written and verbal

Excellent customer service skills and business acumen
